Hello!
Thank you for visiting our 'Fifty Shades of Pink' team page. We're a team of five energetic walkers who are extremely excited to be taking part in The Pink Star Walk to raise money for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.
Did you know that eight women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand? The money raised from our walk will be used to fund vital research projects and support women recovering from and living with breast cancer in New Zealand. It costs just $40 to fund 2 hours of home care or provide 4 cooked meals for someone living with secondary breast cancer.
Our very lovely friend and fellow walker, Lynley, was a fit and healthy woman with no family history of cancer when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 48 years old. And 12 years later, the 'devil' returned and unfortunately this time, she had go through a mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. This came as a complete shock for Lynley and her family, as there was absolutely no symptom, no lump or any sign of illness at the time. Thank goodness for mammograms, Lynley's cancer was detected early. Fortunately, at the time of detection, the cancer cells were still contained in the breast and hadn't spread into her lymph nodes, therefore, chemotherapy was not required. The journey to fight breast cancer was frightening and life-changing. Reflecting back on it now, our ever optimistic Lynley thinks that it was also one of the most positive experiences of her life. After her treatment, she joined the CanSurvive Dragon Boat team, where all the women in the team have survived breast cancer. The fact that these women have been through the same life-threatening experience gives them a special bond. Together, they regularly compete against other breast cancer teams within New Zealand. They have also competed overseas in Australia, Florida and they will heading to Florence next year to compete against other survivors from all around the world. They are truly breast friends paddling for life! It is absolutely amazing that something like cancer can take one down a totally different path, and enables one to view the world from a completely new perspective. There is truly life after breast cancer!
Please consider donating today so we can help improve the quality of life for hundreds of New Zealand women. We would greatly appreciate you helping us spread the words to people around you about our cause.
We cannot do this alone, but with your help we can truly make a difference. Thank you in advance for your support.
